URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTIS): TREATMENT
Rather than waiting on the results of the test, and enduring a few more days of increasing discomfort, treatment can be started if there is a good chance a UTI is the cause of the problems. An antibiotic will often be prescribed at the initial visit and the results checked later when they are available. If there is no improvement, or if the results show a different antibiotic would be more appropriate, the antibiotic may be changed.
Other things which help in the treatment of UTIs are:
• Urinary alkalinisers. These are mixtures, made up with powder and water, which act to make the urine less acid. Infection increases the acidity of the urine, and the roost common result is the burning discomfort people feel when they wee. Having a sachet of alkaliniser (trade names Ural and Citravescent) three times a day for a couple of days can help to relieve symptoms.
• Increased fluid intake. Drinking more water is usually the last thing you want to do when it hurts to wee, but it helps to dilute the bugs, and flush them out. The fluid in the urinary tract becomes more like a clear running
stream than a dirty stagnant pond.
