THE RESULTS OF SMEAR TEST
(v) CIN1 (mild dysplasia). This is the earliest form of pre-cancerous change (dysplasia). CIN stands for ‘cervical intraepithelial neoplasia’, which basically means cancer changes within the cell. CIN1 is thought to precede CIN2, and therefore could progress further to invasive cancer. In some studies it has been suggested that many cases of CIN1 may spontaneously regress to normal, although there is no way of knowing which ones will regress, and which ones will progress to a higher degree of dysplasia. If cells sampled from a cervix show CIN1 it indicates that there is a chance of early pre-cancerous change in the cervix, and the cervix should be examined more closely.
(vi) CIN2 (moderate dysplasia). The cells are a little more disorganised, and look a bit more like cancer cells than CIN1. Again there is a chance of spontaneous regression, but there is also a chance of progression.
(vii) CIN3 (severe dysplasia). These very disorganised cells may progress to invasive cancer if left untreated. As it is impossible to tell which ones will regress back to normal, all should be considered as potentially progressive.
(iii) Cancer. This smear suggests that there is evidence of cancer cells, which may be encroaching on the surrounding normal tissue. Confirmation further investigation.
